Updates and Play toys

by Megan on Mar.26, 2009, under Apple mac, Geek related, Scooter, freebies

Firstly an Update on my list of things to do this year.

I can now say that one of the items is so close to being complete it’s so not funny.

This is the photo of my new Scooter, it’s not the same as the one I wrote about last time, but it’s mine non the less.
An Orion/People s 200 by Kymco and I’m paying for it by myself after being knocked back for a loan to get the Xciting 500, I don’t mind really not getting the bigger bike, the idea that this one will be mine when I hand over the last payment is all a little bit sweeter then having to pay it off for 5 years.

Now on to the play toys.

Yesterday I was watching the revealing of the Macheist 3 Bundle of software as you do.
Now they had been giving away free bundles and I thought why not, answer a question and I might even have a 1 in a 10000000 chance of winning.

Well the shock of my life happened when a few people on twitter told me that I’d won!! How cool is that, my name was read out and I giggled at how Lisa pronounced it, but it’s better then my old handle.

Talk about having a good run of luck lately.

Free Hosting Bites

by Megan on Mar.05, 2009, under Computers, Geek related, blogs, freebies

One of the reasons why I don’t update this blog as much as I had hoped is due to it being down more then up every week.
As sad as it may seem I’m a member of the “free Hosting” club as I didn’t have the money at the time to get both a domain name and hosting to go with it, so I have to settle for what I had.

How at the start my hosting provider was pretty good, lots of space and no hassles, that was until they started getting popular, which happens to most things that are free.

I’d be down say maybe 2 or three times in a month, which didn’t bother me at the time as I just teed up posts to go later and forgot about it.
But lately the Hosts have been getting lots of DOS attacks which means my site is down more then it’s up, making posting and general upkeep of this blog bloody hard.

Thankfully I do have a solution to this, but I just have to get around to asking my boss to set up a hosting account for me, which I think I’ll have to do soon so I can start really working on this site and my meganrogers.net domain before it runs out.

The Best Day

by Megan on Feb.15, 2009, under Scooter, life

Friday the 13th in most ways is black friday. The day that bad things happen, luck is stretched and lots of salt is thrown.

Well this years first friday the 13th I had the BEST day!

It started very early, woke up at 5-am so I could drive 2 hours to Shepparton so I could participate in a Introduction to Motorcycles course at DECA.

Didn’t really know what to expect from the day but it was sure worth the money!

The group was all woman and we started out watching a DVD about riding a motorbike and spoke about why we wanted to ride with the trainer being surprised that we all basically had the same reason - seen others doing it and wanted to be in their role.

Out of the five of us on the course, I was the only one who was buying a scooter, which was good because DECA only had one scooter to use and it was mine for the whole 4 hours.

We started out being show first how to turn the bikes on (very important) and then all hopped on our bikes/scooter to learn about slow breaking as we rode with our feet barely touching the ground. That bit was weird at first but once you got used to the controls the move - break move -break thing was pretty good.

Then we moved on to the bit I was a little worried about - feet up / break, this was where we where actually riding properly when your feet either sit on the bike pegs or as with a scooter, sit on the scooters shelf.
Once you got your feet up, the whole go - stop - one foot down when breaking thing was a bit of a co-ordination thing, as you had to place the foot on the opposite side to the front break down on the ground, most of us didn’t quiet get it to start off with, but after a few wobbles we all where riding around pretty well, and I was loving it, the scooter I was on wasn’t as fast or as “grunt” as the one I’m buying, but those first few trips around the riding area totally surpassed what I thought being on a scooter would be like, I had the biggest smile on my face when we finished that exercise and I spoke to the trainer.

After this we learnt more about turning corners and how you have to look where you’re going and not at the road as the bike will head in the direction you look at and if you are looking at the tree, you’ll hit the tree. o.O
At this part of the course some of the other ladies where having a few teething troubles, with stalling the bikes and remembering not to over do it with the clutch, and I felt sorry for them as we where all doing so well up until then, so while they where doing this I was riding around and around, swerving between the witches hats, enjoying myself all the while going at a breath-taking 20 kph ( hehe)

After the quick drinks break we all went on to gear changing, which I didn’t have to worry about (scoots are automatic so no gears), but did pay attention to and we then did what is called a slow ride - you have to make sure your head is up and looking straight ahead and make sure your speed is slow and stay within the lines.
My first shot at this I went a bit fast, but after giving it a second go, the Trainer said that If this was my learners permit test I’d have passed 100% I did it so well, and to make sure it wasn’t a fluke - I did it again and got it spot on.

Some of the others things we where show was how to use the indicators, how to do a slow speed stop and had a few practices with some of the things needed for our learners test.

As I said at the start, riding this scooter was the most exciting thing I’d done in a long time, and having that first taste, I can not wait to get my own.
I also think it was good being an all female group, having a guy in the class other the the trainer would have made it a little less relaxed as guys tend to over power these sort of things and we basically bounced off each other and no-one felt they had to be perfect straight away.

Another good thing was that none of us fell off, which was a plus.

Now I’ve booked my learners permit test for the 4th of March, with DECA so I can’t wait!!

One 2009 goal half way completed.

by Megan on Jan.20, 2009, under Scooter, Shopping

One of the items I listed in my 2009 plans post was to buy a new car, well that plan has been scraped and changed to something a whole lot better.

I’m getting myself one of these.

bug_xciting-jpeg-image-290x290-pixelsIt’s a Bug Xciting 500cc Motor Scooter;  After seeing a whole lot of other scooters and being told lots of information by a whole load of Motorcycle shop workers, this little baby caught my eye and had me hooked.

Now buying a scooter is not a new passing fancy of mine, I’ve wanted one of these beauties for  as long as I can remember. So when I informed my parents of this latest statement, they where not very concerned or surprised.
So to keep me on the straight and narrow for this little goal, I went out and bought myself the Vicroads Motorcycle learners Handbook and I’ve been studying it fairly regularly.
I’ve also booked myself in for the Introduction to Motorcycles Course that DECA training runs prior to doing my L’s.

I’ve also parted company with a bit of cash for safety gear, and I must say I’ve never spent this much money on clothing before ever.
I picked up this jacket
jacket
It’s by RST and is both a Summer and a Winter Jacket for $199 which was a lot less then what I thought I’d be spending.

And a pair of Draggin Jeans - Cargo Pants.

A seriously good set of pants, that going by the web site, will withstand being dragged along the ground by your legs and not loose your butt. These where also $199 and fit really well and look great on.

All I have to do now is pick up my helmet as I rready have a set of gloves and boots, then the scooter and I’ll be ready for anything once I get my license.

Breakfast of champs or chumps

by Megan on Jan.19, 2009, under General, life

Sitting in the car writing this today, after having breakfast at one of the local cafes I visit a lot, I was thinking about what I’d just had for breakfast.

When I’m at home I normally have something healthy, but for some reason when ever I go out, I’ll normally end up having something not so good for me.

It always makes me wonder why it is that, when your at home you stuck to the good stuff but going out for a meal the rules go out the window?
